Quality and Patient Safety


The Emory Critical Care Center (ECCC) Quality team directs and oversees quality improvement initiatives and supervises integration of quality and safety into all facets of clinical care. The Quality team includes co-directors David Carpenter and Seema Tekwani, and data analyst Ayesha Mukhtar.

Our Goals:

  • Identifies best practices and provides operational support for standardization across ECCC. 
  • Publishes a quality dashboard to provide real-time, individualized feedback for ECCC operational units.
  • Supports high-performing ICU teams through application of HRO and Lean principles.
  • Provides leadership and oversight for continuous process improvement.
  • Supports dissemination of knowledge and scholarship to enhance critical care quality. 

Quality Leadership

Seema S. Tekwani, MD, MHA

Co-Director for Quality

Dr. Tekwani completed her medical school education at T.N. Medical College and B.Y.L. Nair Hospital in India. She completed an Internal Medicine residency at Harlem Hospital, Columbia University from 2009-2012 and fellowship training in Critical Care Medicine at University of Pittsburgh from 2012-2014. Dr. Tekwani joined Emory University as an Assistant Professor of Medicine in 2014 with the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care. She spends her clinical time in the Advanced Respiratory Intensive Care Unit at Emory University Hospital and Medical Intensive Care Units at Grady Memorial Hospital. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Neurocritical Care Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine. She holds a Masters in health administration from University of Missouri-Columbia and pursues quality improvement and patient safety research. Currently, she serves as Co-Director for Quality for Emory Critical Care Center and Medical Director for Medical Intensive Care Unit at Grady Memorial Hospital.

David Carpenter

Co-Director for Quality

Mr. Carpenter has 20 years of experience as a PA having worked in pediatric GI, adult GI, liver transplant surgery, and surgical intensive care. He currently works in the Emory University Hospital Transplant/Surgery ICU where he works as a PA intensivist and co-director of Quality and Patient Safety for the Emory Critical Care Center. Mr. Carpenter is past president of the Colorado Academy of Physician Assistants and Gastroenterology PAs. He has served on multiple committees in the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), including past chair of the Billing and Coding Committee and past chair of the APP Committee. He was a founding member of the Coding and Billing KEG and is a member of the Glycemic Control Committee. In addition to his master’s in physician assistant studies, Mr. Carpenter has a Juris Master from Emory Law in Healthcare and Compliance Law. His work with the Emory Critical Care Center also involves billing education and compliance.
